Oh Ernie, I'm gonna miss you. I had a crush on you in your McHale's Navy days, and I was always happy when you turned up in things: The Posideon Adventure, Escape from New York and Airwolf to name but a few. I cheered at your bit part in Red a couple years ago, just because it was so good to see you at work. You wre one of a kind, and you'll be missed.

God bless.

Like Andy Griffith, another amazing, decade and genre-spanning career. And yeah, Red, I was like, HOLY SHIT, is that Ernie Borgnine? I love these guys who go on working till the end.

Of course, now I'm scared for some of my other OLD favorites: Kirk Douglas, Mike Connors, and Robert Conrad....

I'm torn between thinking Kirk Douglas because he's had a lot of medical stuff the past few years, but suspecting he'll go on forever because he's survived it all.

My guess right now would be another 50's or 60's pop star. Maybe one of the "Bobby's" Rydell or Vee. You know, just to be morbid.

Peter O'Toole just announced his retirement. I hope that doesn't portend anything.

I know, both Kirk and Peter look so frail the last few times I've seen them. *sigh*

I could not stand the way he looked, but, man, could he act.

There's a great story about Sinatra taking his kids to the Oscars the year he won for From Here To Eternity and one of the kids (Nancy, I think) said if she saw Ernest Borgnine, she would hit him for being so mean to her daddy. And he said, "Don't hit him, kiss him. He got Daddy an Oscar nomination."

RIP - he was just amazing in everything I ever saw him in. A true actor who lost himself in every role.

And apparently a truly nice guy as well, with a sense of humor about himself.

I thought he was a wonderful actor but I also liked that he was in the industry when Barbie and Ken faces weren't an absolute necessity for a role.

That's the great miracle of a role like Marty, where the "unattractive" characters weren't just "Hollywood Homely."
