RIP-Max

My co-worker, Steve, has just informed me that his dog Max was put to sleep yesterday, following a long illness. I've been going through this with Steve and his partner, Mike for a nearly a year, and I'm encouraging Steve to take tomorrow off. I can only imagine the pain that he and Mike and Stryker (the family's other dog) are going through right now. As desperately as I want a dog, I'm not sure how I would ever handle the inevitable.

Max is the dog with his front paws visible.

The same way you handle any death. You love them while they're with you, grieve their passing and learn to remember their life, not their absence. I always say I can't do this again, but how can I say no to giving another abandoned or unwanted animal a second chance? I doubt I'll ever be without pets. We're thinking about getting another dog as it's been five years.

I'm thinking of you today as well. Of course I'd get a dog in a heartbeat if the rest of the living situation fell into place. In the meantime, I have my vicarious dogs on the streets and the thought that if I ever do get fired, I'll find work as a walker or in some other dog-related field.

Really does. Steve has been agonizing over this decision for months, so I'm sure that Max was in a really bad way and it was time, but I can't imagine the devastation of having to make the decision at all

Meh, I've been there (though it was over sick rats, not sick dogs). Not fun at all, even if you know it's time and they're suffering. :((((

He was so cute. I'm so sorry for their loss. I hope he takes time off, I didn't and I regretted it later.

I've made it clear that I'm there to hold down the fort, especially since I've just had a week off, so I'm as chilled as I'll ever be.

I'm hoping I can be a good support and friend to Steve while he's going through this

hugs work really well. should the topic come up, validation--that he did exactly the right thing--also helps.

Hugs will have to be virtual. Steve works from home. But I've told him that he did the right thing, that he kept Max alive as long as he could, and let him go when he had to.

Oh my heart breaks... I so know this feeling as my heart is raw right now, too. Much love...

Much love and sympathy from someone who's been there. Such a sweet dog. A terrier of some kind?

Smooth fox terrier, I think. Apparently the other dog is totally lost with out Max. :(

My late aunt had fox terriers, I thought he was very like one of hers. That's so sad, poor dog.

I'm not sure how I would ever handle the inevitable.

Milo is 15 now, and I'm getting more and more worried about this, even though he's in bloody good health (for his age) right now.

Yay for Milo. Wishing him a long and healthy life, and you two to have many happy years together.

I know. Really sad. Steve is doing more or less OK. I hear Mike is taking it hard and Stryker is just lost. That's got to be the worst.
