RIP Grandma Shirley

Sometime last night, peacefully and in her sleep.

Here she is about two months ago surrounded by daughters and granddaughters.

Winston Women

She lived a good and full life and if you believe in that kind of thing she's now with my Grandfather, who passed about year and three months ago. Grandma hasn't been "home" in quite a while and in the last few years it was hard to remember the Grandma who took me to old movies at the Thalia and Theater 80 St. Mark and concerts at Lincoln Center and was very supportive of my writing etc.

I wish that the last time I saw her, when this picture was taken hadn't been such a stressful occasion, because it was so hard to get her to and from the nursing home for any events.

She kept my great-grandfather from going to WWI by being born in time for him to run the birth certificate down to the draft office and she kept right on being amazing into her 80's. It was only in the last ten years or so that she slipped away.

If I accomplish a fraction of the things she did in her lifetime, I'll be pretty damn lucky.

Thank you! I'm getting to that age where there are fewer and fewer people alive who've literally known me ALL MY LIFE, and that's a sad realization.

Thanks, sweetie! I'm honestly not particularly upset---it was her time, by a long shot. Mostly stressed at the family interactions to come.

I love that photo too. She sounds amazing and I'm glad you have good memories of her, despite the more difficult later years.

*hug* I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you! At some point I'll have to compile a list of her accomplishments, including her work in parapsychology.

Thank you! I'm not particularly in mourning, but it was truly an amazing life and to see her so diminished in the end was rather tragic.

Although there was a lot of stress in the to-ing and fro-ing department, it's nice that there was a last family occasion, and that she lived to see all her grandchildren get married. (One divorce, but hey.)

Thanks. It's truly a blessing at this point, even without a conviction as to the next life.

*hugs* I'm sorry for your loss, she sounds like an amazing lady. Even when it's their time, it hurts to lose family, at least a little.

I think it's much rougher on my mother and aunt who've lost both their parents in the space of a year. There's sorrow, but a lot of relief, as well. It was truly sad to see this woman slip further into dementia over the last few years.

Thanks sweetie! It was a good reminder of how I don't want my own passing and the aftermath to go down.
