RIP Ken Norton

Former heavyweight champion Norton dies.

I remember some of these fights. One is tempted to wax nostalgic about a time when boxing wasn't quite such a freak-show, but given Mr. Ali's current condition, perhaps not.

And let's not forget Mr. Norton's (ahem) stellar movie performances in both Mandingo AND Drum, without which, we wouldn't have Django Unchained.

RIP.

I never saw Mandingo, but I remember seeing Drum many, many years ago. It was interesting, but I wonder how I would feel about it these days now, though I do remember enough to note the homage in Django Unchained. I also remember two things about it, not to do with Mr Norton's performance. There was a lesbian relationship between a slave and her mistress, one of the first lesbian relationships I ever remember seeing in a movie, and also there was a French/from New Orleans character who had the line "piece of merde" just after I learned what merde meant in French.

Amazing what sticks with us from the movies we see when we're very young.

It really is. I have a bunch of those kind of memories, even of movies I've actually rewatched more recently, those small things that stay in the mind.
