I first met Dr. Smith in the 80's when I was working at an agency on Union St, and got a massive toothache...on the Friday before Memorial Day. His office was literally upstairs from mine and I went up and BEGGED for an appointment. He took care of me and I have not let another man touch my molars, bicuspids or canines since.
I am a big, giant WUSS when it comes to my teeth. Probably as a result of passed for orthodontia and dentistry when I was growing up on the 70's. The first time Dr. Smith worked on me, he immediately gleaned that I was a bit of a special needs case. Possible when I screamed bloody blue murder during an attempted novocaine shot. Since then he makes sure I'm all giggly on nitrous before any other dental activity is attempted, including cleaning.
He is also an absolute saint about letting me pay off whatever portion of my bill isn't covered by insurance in installments and although he lectures me gently about my dental hygiene, he never makes me feel as bad as he probably could.
He also uses what I assume is state of the art technology. For instance today, they took digital pictures of my teeth instead of the old bite down on a sharp piece of white cardboard technique.
So this morning I had a filling replaced and a cleaning and aside from the slight soreness around the gums, I'm fine and functional.
I literally don't know what I would do without this man in my life, although he now has both his daughter and nephew in the practice, so hopefully his technique and "chairside manner" are being handed down.
