(Please note, I'm at work right now, so I can't put in song links. Let me know if there's any songs from this epic that you'd especially like and I'll do those first. I know you're all dying to hear Tip Top Tottenham.)
01▶ Opening Theme
I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good. - Frank Sinatra
Never treats me sweet and gentle the way she should
I got it bad and that ain't good
My poor heart is sentimental, not made of wood
I got it bad and that ain't good
But when the weekend's over and Monday rolls around
I end up like I start out, just cryin' my heart out
Doesn't love me like I love her, no, nobody could
I got it bad and that ain't good
Like a lonely weepin' willow who's lost in the wood
I got it bad and that ain't good
And the things I tell my pillow, nobody should
I got it bad, I got I bad, and it's no good
Though folks with good intentions, they tell me to save up my tears
I'm glad I'm mad about her, I can't live without her
Lord above, make her love me the way that she should
I got it bad and that ain't good
I got it bad and that ain't good
No good
No good
No good
No good
Slow and bluesy with a nice horn section. Sounds like our protagonist is going through a lot, maybe with an edge of self-pity.
02▶ Setting - Sunday For Tea-Peter & Gordon
Sunday for tea
I'll see you Sunday for tea
And though it's not far away
Each hour's a day to me
Lettuce and ham
Or maybe crumpets and jam
Oh baby it'll be fun
Havin' a Sunday tea
And as you pass the sugar bowl to me
I'll see at last your heart and soul will be with me
Sunday could be
A special Sunday for me
Together we'll surely find
We're two of a kind are we
On Sunday for tea
And as you pass the sugar bowl to me
I'll see at last your heart and soul will be with me
Sunday for tea
I'll see you Sunday for tea
Together we'll surely find
We're two of a kind are we
On Sunday for tea
Apparently we're in England. It's sounds chipper, but still with a slightly moody edge. I'm thinking early 60's as well. Maybe a smaller town than London. I've been watching a lot of Morse and Inspector Lewis lately-how about Oxford?
03▶ Protagonist-Shelley My Love-Nick Lowe
Shelley My Love
I only long to be where you are
Shelley My Love
Now and forever more
Shelley My Love
When I see you I catch fire
And soon I'm all aflame
I feel it start whenever you call my name
All around I feel a passion
That fills my very soul
I put it down to that I love you so
Shelley My Love
I only long to be where you are
Shelley My Love
Now and forever more
Shelley My Love
All around I feel a passion
That fills my very soul
I put it down to that I love you so
This time I'm into something
That is not of this world
The love I got is supernatural, girl
Shelley My Love
I only long to be where you are
Shelley My Love
Now and forever more
Shelley My Love
Oh he's a mess, all right. Verging on the obsessive. (As if we couldn't tell from the first song.)
04▶ Antagonist-Work Song-Bobby Darin
Go down … Hannah go down
And stay down …
Breakin’ up these rocks on-a chain gang
Breakin’ rocks and servin’ my time
Breakin’ up these rocks on-a chain gang
‘cause I been convicted of a crime.
Hold it steady right there while I hit it … huh!
Oh, reckon that ought-a get it
Been workin’ … I been workin’
But, I got me so terrible long to go.
I been convicted of the crime, Lord, of needin’
Crime of bein’ hungry and poor
Had-a leave some grocery man bleedin’
When he found me robbin’ his store.
Hold it steady right there while I hit it … huh!
Oh, reckon that ought-a get it
Been workin’ … I been workin’
But, I got me so terrible long to go.
So it seems that Shelley has two suitors...our mopey love-struck student and her lower-class lover who's doing time and suffering...and about to get out of jail?
05▶ Protagonist's Sidekick - Tip Top Tottenham - The Totnamites.
Tip top Tottenham Hotspur, the greatest team of the year
Tip top Tottenham Hotspur, raise your glasses and give them a cheer
Horray for the double, and let's live it up
One drink for the league, and another one for the cup
Since eighteen ninety seven, they've tried finding a way
Now those Spurs are in heaven, it's White Hart Lane's happy day
They've made it at Wembley, they've climbed to the heights
History will honour those brave Lilywhites
Brown and Baker and Henry, oh what joy they did bring
Mackay and Norman and Danny made those rafters ring
The Jones boy and Dyson on the wings how they flew
With Smith, White and Allen, how they slammed wonder goals through
This great story's not ending, we've still got four more to name
Saul and Marchi and Medwin are all on the role of fame
Just one more tribute, so now let us call
On Mister Bill Nicholson,
For making this year the Spurs' happiest year of all
Yes, it is in fact, 1961 and we know what football club the side-kick supports?
He will not shut up about it, even when Nick wants to talk about Shelley.
Let's call him Dugan.
06▶ Antagonist's Sidekick-With Anne on My Arm-(From La Cage Aux Folles)
Girls have come and gone, Papa.
Angelique and Antoinette.
Or did I prefer Leslie or Hélène?
It was all a blur, and yet, Papa,
When Anne comes running down the street,
I link my arm in hers,
Girls have come and gone,
Girls may come and go,
But something very odd occurs, Papa.
'Cause life is in perfect order with Anne on my arm.
It makes my shoulders broader with Anne on my arm.
Even when things won't gel, and the pieces won't fit,
I'm suddenly in, I'm suddenly on, I'm suddenly "it".
Who else can make me feel like I'm handsome and tall?
Who else can make me feel I'm on top of it all?
I found a combination that works like a charm:
I'm simply a man who walks on the stars
Whenever it's Anne on my arm!
Life is a celebration with you on my arm.
Walking's a new sensation with you on my arm.
Each time I face a morning that's boring and bland,
With you it looks good, with you it looks great,
With you it looks grand!
Somehow, you've put a permanent star in my eye.
Even the dead of Winter can feel like July.
We start a conflagration that's cause for alarm.
We're giving off sparks, we're setting off bells,
Whenever it's you on my arm.
Who else can make me feel like I'm handsome and tall?
Who else can make me feel I'm on top of it all?
I found a combination that works like a charm:
I'm simply a man who walks on the stars,
Whenever it's Anne on my arm!
So, it appears Bobby's been making friends in prison. I guess "Anne" is sort of typical 60's camp figure. The question is whether he's in love with Bobby or just saw him as protection. And what Bobby thinks.
07▶ Conflict-Bring It Back-Chris Allen.
Unspoken, in silence
Let's stay here tonight
There's no reason to ask me
Cause you know what's inside
Don't worry now
Seasons will change
Forgive my mouth
For not letting you walk away
Take your love, bring it back
Bring it back
Think before you leave
I forgot what love is
Bring it back
Tell me that you believe
What fate has been telling me
At sundown on the freeway
Is no place for goodbyes
Don't worry now
Seasons will change
Forgive my mouth
For not letting you walk away
Take your love, bring it back
Bring it back
Think before you leave
I forgot what love is
Bring it back
Tell me that you believe
What fate has been telling me
I've got a different ending to our story
I know it's hard for you to hear it through
But listen as I read
Take your love, bring it back
Bring it back
Think before you leave
I forgot what love is
Bring it back
Tell me that you believe
What fate has been telling me
Bobby is getting out of jail---Shelly and Nick spend the night together, but Nick knows her heart is with Bobby. Anne is getting out as well, but he knows Bobby is heading for Anne and doesn't him to go.
08▶ Love Theme-Long Boots Johnson-The Devil Makes Three
Instrumental-it's a blue-grass number so there are roots in England, I guess. It's actually kind of jaunty. Kind of a break from the darkness of the previous scene. So there is hope.
09▶ Plot Twist-One Last Kiss-Bobby Vee
Oh one last kiss, oh baby one last kiss
It never felt like this, oh baby not like this
You know I need your love, oh oh oh give me one last kiss
Oh one more time, oh baby one more time
You made me feel sublime, oh baby so sublime
You know I need your love, oh oh oh give me one last kiss
Darling it isn't right I must be sayin' goodnight
Don't let me go like this
Baby I need you, so what if I have to
Go, just give me one last kiss
Oh one last kiss, oh baby one last kiss
It never felt like this, oh baby not like this
You know I need your love, oh oh oh give me one last kiss
OH BOY! Anne asks for one kiss, thinking it won't mean anything. SURPRISE!!!
10▶ Resolution-The Right Time
You know the night time, darling
(night and day)
Is the right time
(night and day)
To be
(night and day)
With the one you love, now
(night and day)
Say now oh baby
(night and day)
When I come home baby, now
(night and day)
I wanna be with the one I love, now
(night and day)
You know what I'm thinking of
(night and day)
I know the night time
(night and day, oh)
Whoa, is the right time
(night and day, oh)
To be with the one you love, now
(night and day)
I said to be with the one you love
(night and day)
You know my mother, now
(night and day)
Had to die, now
(night and day)
Umm, and my father
(night and day)
Well he broke down and cry
(night and day)
Whoah! whoa baby
(night and day)
When I come home baby now
(night and day)
I want you to hold my hand
(night and day)
Yeah, tight as you can
(night and day)
I know the night time
(night and day, oh)
Whoah is the right time
(night and day, oh)
To be with the one you love
(night and day)
You know what I'm thinking of
(night and day)
Whoah! sing your song, Margie
Baby
(night and day)
Baby
(night and day)
Baby
(night and day)
Oh, Baby
(night and day)
Do I love you?
(night and day)
No one above you
(night and day)
Hold me tight
(night and day)
And make everything all right
(night and day)
Because the night time
(night and day)
Oh, is the right time
(night and day)
To be with the one you love now
(night and day)
Oh yeah
(night and day)
Tease me
(night and day)
Squeeze me
(night and day)
Leave me
(night and day)
Ah, don't leave me
(night and day)
Lawdy baby
(night and day)
Take my hand, now
(night and day)
I don't need
(night and day)
No other man
(night and day)
Because the night time
(night and day)
Ow, is the right time
(night and day)
To be with the one you love
(night and day)
Oh yeah
(night and day)
I said baby
(night and day)
Baby
(night and day)
Baby
(night and day)
Baby
(night and day)
Whoah! baby now
(night and day)
Oh come on baby
(night and day)
You know I want you by my side
(night and day)
I want you to keep
(night and day)
Oh keep me satisfied
(night and day)
I know the night time
(night and day)
Everyday is the right time
(night and day)
Yeah to be with the one you love now
(night and day)
Well you know it's all right
This is also very bluesy sexy. Anne and Bobby have a nice hot (by 1961) standards scene somewhere and Nick and Shelley take a romantic walk in the moonlight, followed by a big, mushy, romantic kiss. Dugan is happy because Tottenham wins the championship.
11▶ Closing Theme-Shallow Brown-The Crooked Jades.
Fare thee well, me Juliana
Shallow, o shallow brown
Fare thee well, me Juliana
Shallow, o shallow brown
And it's shallow in the morning
Just as the day was dawning
I've put me clothes in order
For our packet leaves tomorrow
Yes, our packet leaves tomorrow
And it fills me heart with sorrow
For I love to gaze upon you
And to spend me money on you
O you are me only treasure
And I love ye still full measure
In me cradle lies me baby
I don't want no other lady
O my wife and baby grieve me
It just breaks me heart to leave ye
For I'm bound away to leave ye
But I never will deceive ye
Fare the well me Juliana
Fare thee well, me Juliana
An old tyme ballad, so again, roots in England. Very dirge-like. So maybe the "happy" ending isn't happy for anyone in the long time. Shelley is still going to go for bad boys. Bobby and Anne face a very tough road, and we all know what happens to Tottenham.
12▶ Sequel?-Du, Du Gefällst Mir So - Cliff Richard.
I can't find the lyrics in German, but this is basically a German translation of an American folk song called "Green Green."
Green, green, it's green , they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I'm going away
To where the grass is greener still
Well I told my Momma on the day I was born
Don't you cry when you see I'm gone
You know there ain't no woman gonna settle me down
I just got to keep traveling on
There ain't no woman in this whole wide world
Gonna tell me how to spend my time
I'm just a good loving rambling man
Singing, buddy, can you spare me a dime
I don't care when the sun goes down
Where I lay my weary head
Green, green valley or rocky road
It's there I'm gonna lay my head
The travels of Anne and Bobby.
