Sleeping In The Devil's Bed

Random update post, with random song title header. (Although that would make a good drabble prompt.)

Last night I noticed that our finch was hopping very slowly around the bottom of the cage and not managing to fly around or get up on any of her perches. I investigated and it seemed she was in a bad way, but I didn't know why or what to do about it. About an hour or so later, she was just in a corner, being very still and Hubby told me it was pretty much over.

We've had her a long time. She was one of two we originally bought back in 2002, after Hubby had a near-death medical experience, where he was intubated for 12 days. His spiritual advisor at the time thought we should either have children or get a bird so there would be constant music in the house. (Never mind the number of instruments that Hubby plays.) We got two finches and a few years later one of them passed on...so we brought in a few others and they didn't make it. We think this one offed them. Then a few years later, she started laying eggs. This freaked me out so much that we tried to get her a mate, but he didn't make it home alive. So for the last year, she's been alone and laying eggs and I've been wondering if she was ok...I guess she ran out of energy or something and that's it. I wasn't a really enthusiastic bird owner. Obviously the pet I want is of the four legged, furry variety. But I feel sad and guilty.

This happened while we were watched episodes 4 & 5 of the The Hour. I love this show So Much. Not at State of Play levels because as much as I like the actors and characters, and was SO HAPPY to see Burn Gorman in a great role, I also don't have the carry-over passion that I had for Simm and Glenister in State of Play, which is the obvious comparison. The actors are attractive, the lines are witty, but there's just nothing that like instant connection and the charisma that Simm pretty much brings to everything. I am shipping Freddy and Hector like crazy. Is there fic? Is there fandom?

Tumblr is eating my life. Seriously MOST ADDICTIVE THING EVER. Not necessarily the only reason why I am so far back on getting the Drabble-a-Day fics posted to A03 or even crossposted to omni-fiction, but it sure ain't helping.

Five consecutive exercise days. I went to the gym Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and biked to/from work on Tuesday and Thursday. Friday I had a session with a trainer. PAIN! Good pain. Controlled pain, but still pain. Today it just felt so good to sleep in. Very stiff this morning. My food is also in better shape than it has been in a long time. Unfortunately that means a lot of time spent in hunger and a slight daze from low blood sugar, which is SCARY and can lead to being disoriented. Like being on BART and suddenly not knowing which direction one is going in. I'm really determined to live up to my own (and Geneen Roth's) rule about staying off the scale this time. I'm repeating the mantra "Skinny jeans for New Years." Note that this does not mean literal skinny jeans, as these are clearly evil and not of the lord, but rather that I would like to be in my size 12's (which are still somewhat stretchy) for an outing to the Mint on December 31st.

Hugh Laurie is playing the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival this year, in support of his blues album. I'm not as Squeeeee-ful about this as one would imagine. Part if it is time. Even two years ago and certainly three, when House was still a great show and my Hugh-lust was running much higher, it would have been a no-brainer. However...1. Last year it was so cold and miserable up there. I really love the festival in theory and I've seen some amazing performances there. But it's gotten so massive that there's no way to really see anything except to get there incredibly early and stay put at one stage all day. Also, the weather. October in SF is hit or miss. Can be brutally hot or freezing cold or both in one day. I can only hope we'll get a warm day this year. BUT if Hugh is considered a "headliner" and plays late in the day after the fog has rolled in...brrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm genuinely curious to see if his celebrity will afford him a place on the "Banjo stage" such as Steve Martin had last year or whether he'll be on one of the smaller stages.

Also...I've heard the album. I generally LOVE Hugh's piano playing and singing. I still look forward to the rare piano-gasm that House MD sometimes gives us. I think as a jazz player and singer or even doing some his pop music pastiches like "Misery" he's amazing. The blues...not so much. At least not as a singer. I realize this will be taken as blasphemy in some quarters. Sorry chocolate_frapp, but much as I'm willing to say that some of John Barrowman's cheesy pop covers are rubbish, I have to say that loving the blues doesn't make one a good blues singer.

So it will basically come down to the actual scheduled. Hubby is mostly interested in seeing Bela Fleck, who will be playing with Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer. IF they happen to be playing on the same day as Hugh and the same stage, we'll probably go for it. Otherwise....not so sure.

Plans for the day...laundry, dishes, picking up, hot bath, downloads (QI, Confidential), and then hubby and I are going out to dinner in Berkeley. Why Berkeley when I live so close to so much great food that doesn't require a BART ride and a long walk? Apparently his Shakuhachi teacher is playing at the restaurant in question. So we'll having Japanese food and Shakuhachi music. Then we'll come back and watch Doctor Who, etc.
