Bay to Breakers

Bay to Breakers-Garmin Forerunner stats and map

First time I've participated since 1988, at which point I had lost pretty much my last vestige of fitness and was also burned out on the crowds, the cray-cray and the flying tortillas.

Basically I only did it because I got an email on Halloween offering a registration rate of $31.00, and since the regular registration had gone to more than double that, I figured why not.

So there I was at 8AM yesterday in Corral D...waiting and waiting and waiting and yes I did get whaled by a few tortillas. There was some kind of security delay and then each corral had to go out...slowly. I crossed the starting line at 852AM and according to Garmin, I finish in 2:13:19. I'm happy with that considering the crowds and the Hayes St. Hill. Let me tell you folks, I threw a LOT of elbows to keep myself moving through mob.

In run-up to race day I got emails nearly every day saying that nudity, alcohol and back-packs would not be permitted. On race-day, I saw plenty of nekkid runners, plenty of drinking, some nekkid drinking and the ONLY thing that got police attention was back-packs. You could be showing your naughty bits and guzzling the beverage of your choice-NOTHING. Have a Hello Kitty back-pack and the cops were ALL OVER YOU!

As I crossed the finish line, I made sure the announcer mentioned me as a member of SF Bicycle Co-alition, since I was wearing the t-shirt.

As usual, the hardest part was getting home. No cabs to had and Muni was basically commandeered by the race with buses taking nonexistent routes to locations that were no where near my home.

I did get home eventually and was able to wear my awesome Bay to Breakers t-shirt to the Mint, where there was a lot of post race madness in progress.

I'm not sure about next year. It's always SUCH a clusterfuck, but it's such a San Francisco clusterfuck that if I get another $31.00 deal, it would be hard to resist.

I'll have piccies posted tomorrow.
