Book/Series of books:
I, The Jury by Mickey Spillane. Or any of the Mike Hammer novels. Because it was both the culmination of the hard-boiled detective genre and took it from the past into the future, and the writing is just compelling. You start the book, you have to keep going. AND HOT!


Anime/Manga: I have no idea. I'm told Bleach is good. Let's say Bleach. Never watched it though. (I've never watched ANY so I'm copying this answer directly from kiwi_from_hell.)
