More about Politics and Religion

Thanks to hllangel for look-over and typo catches. Opinions expressed below are my own.

I should probably just stick to fannish debates where I end up getting accused of being a "rape apologist" among other tasty tidbits, but this needs to be said loud and clear:

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT RELIGION THE PRESIDENT IS OR IF HE HAS ONE AT ALL!

Last night's coverage of the pull-out of combat forces from Iraq brought one of my most picayune, yet heart-felt pet peeves of all times to the fore.

The following definitions come the good folks at Merriam Webster

Historical
Main Entry: his·tor·i·cal
Pronunciation: \-i-kəl\
Function: adjective
Date: 15th century

1 a : of, relating to, or having the character of history b : based on history c : used in the past and reproduced in historical presentations
2 : famous in history : historic a
3 a : secondary 1c b : diachronic

Historic
Main Entry: his·tor·ic
Pronunciation: \hi-ˈstȯr-ik, -ˈstär-\
Function: adjective
Date: 1594

: historical: as a : famous or important in history b : having great and lasting importance c : known or established in the past d : dating from or preserved from a past time or culture

So, Richard Engle, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and anybody else who talked about it last night and got it wrong: the pull-out from Iraq was NOT "historical". It was "historic."

I know, picky, picky, picky and it may be a distinction that's fading away in general usage, but it drives me nuts every time.
