Three Fandoms Meme

Seen all over my flist, but I gave the honors to mad_jaks

RULES: Comment and I'll LJ stalk you to find THREE FANDOMS you apparently love. And then you answer these questions about them!

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

mad_jaks gave me the following:

1) House
2) whichever one came first for you out of Who and Torchwood
3) Heroes

House

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?

I'd sort of heard about it, but hadn't bothered tuning in/tivo-ing, although the buzz sounded faintly interesting. Snarky, drug-addicted doctor. I wasn't into Hugh Laurie at that point, beyond liking "brit-com" Hugh, so there was no particular urgency about it.

Out of curiousity, I put the first season DVD's on my Netflix queue, and started watching them while the 2nd season was in it's early episodes, but I wasn't watching them because I wanted to see the show from the beginning. Netflix got me the disks slightly out of order, so I think the first show I saw was Damned If You Do, which is pretty much as sub-texty/slashy as you can get, plus got me immediately into Chase's religious issues.

I was definitely interested at that point, but I don't think I really got the *ping* until I get the disk with Pilot on it and heard House quote the philosopher Jagger, and since I actually use that quote all the time, usually saying "As a wise man once said, you can't always get what you want." I felt a total kinship to House.

After that, we glomped the rest of the 1st season and started watching the 2nd season episodes starting with "Deception," which was pretty confusing, since I hadn't seen The Mistake Yet.

Just around that time, I googled "House/Wilson slash" just to see if anyone else thought it was as obvious as I did (hahahahahahahahahah). That took me to the House_Slash comm on LJ and started the 2nd Chapter in my fannish life. (The first being haven grown up in Sci-fi and Star Trek fandom.)

02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

OUCH! I've started to hate what this show has become. The newbies. The fanservice. The repetition. The bullshit. BUT!!!! There's still Hugh Laure and RSL as House & Wilson. There's still piano-gasms. There's still the ocasional moment of brilliance. I'll probably stay till the bitter end, but retain my privilege to keep bitching out the show for its failures and castigating those cast members whose very presence on the screen nauseates me.

03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?

Three Stories (although I have a hard time watching after the patient is revealed as House.) Hunting (sorry kids, Meth sex is HOT). All In-TUXEDOS/Red Dress plus a Piano-gasm. Half-Wit-My favorite piano-gasm, the Chase hug, the Cam Kiss, the Cuddy Ass-grab.

04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Just a little. :D

05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

Torn about this. First and second seasons, I practically stood on street corners giving away DVDs to get people interested.

I'd still want people to see those two seasons. I honestly can't in good conscience tell them to stick with anything after that. I've embraced certain bits of season 3 because it's still better than the crap that came after, but honestly, I'm more and more drawn to a House that ended with No Meaning.

Who/Torchwood

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?

I sort of need to tackle them together, although I do realize they are completely different Fandoms, however, my door in was Barrowman as Captain Jack, so that sort of links them together.

During the third season of House, a bunch of people on my F-list started babbling about this Torchwood thing, and how it was this great show with canon slash where everybody screwed everybody and oh yeah, this guy called Captain Jack. I didn't get it AT ALL! And I certainly had no interest in a new fandom that I couldn't even see in the US.

Then timbershiver asked me to beta her Wilson/Jack crossover fic, and I looked up a picture of Jack just so I'd know what I was working with and got hit by the thunderbolt of Barrowmania.

Within days, I'd downloaded at least one song from I-tunes, and run out to get a copy of Dr. Who that had him in it. So the first New Who episode (and probably any Who) I ever saw was The Empty Child. That got me hooked both on Jack and New Who, so I had to go back and see everything starting with Rose. This is why I'm so very committed to Empty Child Jack and can't stand the schmoopification.

I also started down-loading fanvids, so I was also fairly spoiled (at least by image) for most of the kisses in Torchwood.

By this time, I was totally hooked on paperclipbitch's Torchwood fics, which had a Ianto who was very similar to the way she wrote Chase, so I didn't hate him in those stories.

I got to see Torchwood when BBC-America Showed it in September of 2007. (And the Ianto hate pretty much started with the first snivel in Cyberwoman) I had issues with it---pretty much hated Cyberwoman, Countrycide, and Combat--but the Barrowmania was so strong at that point, I was much less critical.

I think I saw the Utopia arc before Torchwood as well, so I got it all in very mixed up fashion, but I always knew that Jack with the Doctor was better than Jack with anyone else. :)

02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

AGAIN-OUCH!!!

I'm not sure I can physically watch the next series of Torchwood based on the spoilers. And that makes me so sad. But even if the worst Jack-destroying b.s. comes true, I need to stay and fight the good fiction fight to subvert it. (If Jack buys a ring and gets on his knees to Ianto and buys the curtains himself, I'll still find a way to write it as b.u.f.t, I swear!)

I'm curious enough about the New Doctor to go through another series of Dr. Who, especially with Moffet in charge. My one prayer is that Jack gets back to Who, with Moffet in charge and he finds a way to retcon every bit of OOC-schmoopyness and give us back Real!Jack.

03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Who:
Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Blink
Utopia arc
The Wasp and the Unicorn (I love Donna, but I feel like most of the 4th season episodes were too "messagey" to be much fun. Slavery is Bad. War Is Bad. Yeah, Russell, we get it.)

Torchwood:
Everything Changes
Small Worlds
Captain Jack Harkness )
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (For the first Jack/John scenes and the fact that TIMING IS EVERYTHING.)
Reset-Because Jack was so happy to see Martha and Ianto clearly HATED it.
Something Borrowed-

04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Again, fairly obsessively, and again I reserve the right to call bullshit on the destruction of a great character and what should have been a great show.

05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?

The Who side, yes. At this point, it's very hard for me to recommend even the first season of Torchwood because the well is so very poisoned. I don't even hard sell it to my Barrowmania converts until I know they've been indoctrinated with Real!Jack from the Who episodes.

*****

Heroes

01: What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I think it was the fic before I'd ever seen the show, specifically paperclipbitch's obsession with Isaac.

Then hllangel was kind enough to burn the first season for me, so I was able to gulp that, and I instantly got hooked on Noah and was thrilled to see Christopher Eccleston as Claude.

02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I could stay the course. I'm much more tolerant of this one. I watched the snooze of a second season on DVD when hubby was in the hospital the first time around. I'm pretty much able to filter out the crap and just hone in on the good stuff. I have ships and passions but not ship-war level passions if you know what I mean. Basically I just want to see Jack Coleman and Adrian Pasdar doing cool stuff.

03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Company Man
Five Years Gone
Cold Wars
Cold Snap

04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
I've written fic and I post my Heroes-babbles, but it's not at that obsessional level.

05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Sure. I think it's a fun show, but not one that I'd prosletize for or against. Just know when you go in that a lot of it is crap, but the fun stuff is a lot of fun. Plus----Adrian Pasdar and Jack Coleman. I ship them because they're the two hottest guys on the show, and the only ones who generally look and act like grown ups. Sorry kids-Milo V. does nothing for me, although it doesn't take a tin hat to see the Petrellicest.
