Opinion question for my NOVEL

I've reached the point in the narrative where a sum of money is introduced. Basically it's the MacGuffin to drive the plot forward, at least for awhile. My question is...how much money is enough for people to risk their lives, or livelihoods, or freedom for, while still being a "practical" amount.

Does this make any sense?

I'm feeling flummoxed by the idea that either I'll come up with an amount that people would laugh at because it's not enough or one that's too big to be logical or even too big for the "normal" people involved to get their heads around.

If it doesn't feel real, I'm afraid the plot being driven by the search for the money will then fall apart.
