I honestly don't know what to say about this. It was horrible, but not in a ODOR/Last Resort kind of way. I think it's just an example of the writers having absolutely no idea what's actually great (or used to be) about the show.
Let's get the House/Wilson, or lack thereof out of the way first. This is the first time I've actually felt the righteous indignation of a "slap" to the House/Wilson fanbase. YES, they've spent most of the season teasing the slashers. After the one-chair stand in rehab, they had the whole House/Wilson living together routine, where it was almost canon that they were actually sleeping together, then the condo, the gay chicken with the neighbor, the fluffy smile in the furniture episode and finally a series of episodes that seemed absolutely crafted to support my angsty vision of H/W. Those episodes were like a slash shell-game where they'd tease us with H/W, acting like they were really going to acknowledge either the sex or the love or both...and then throw in some H/Cuddy either sex jokes or implications that it was Cuddy that House really loved.
That stuff never bothered me because I was getting my H/W angst jollies, along with validation for my tin hat H/W shippiness.
Sometimes I felt like Hugh Laurie was selling the H/Cuddy and sometimes I didn't, but I certainly never believed that Cuddy felt anything for him. I don't know if it's the writers, Lisa E, or the power of H/W, but it never worked. But like I said, I was willing to buy it, although I still would have preferred H/Cam right up until the very end. I think the chemistry and the back-story supported it, but *shrug* whether it was Hugh's "oh she's too young" issues or what...we didn't get that.
So...there we were with this fake UST between House & Cuddy and I kept insisting they couldn't get together until they dealt with the infarction.
Am I supposed to believe they I've been put through that 52 minutes of boring, chemistry free, badly acted shit with "Hannah," all so House could forgive CUDDY for the operation, clearing the path for them to get together?
If I was supposed to get some connection or bonding between House and Patient...NOT SO MUCH. Yes, I get the anvils about saving her leg, but by making Cuddy deliberately obtuse: "I get that you're mad at me." As if he were upset about Lucas and not the leg, they really diluted any possibility of getting that point across.
Plus, let's not forget the person that House really made suffer about the leg. HELLO STACY!!!
I have spent the past 21 episodes railing about the horror of "New and Improved" House. Begging the TPTB for a relapse (especially since he's emotionally and alcoholically in one anyway) and then you almost give it to me....but wuss out and then make it "For the love of Cuddy?"
I call bullshit. On behalf of the real Gregory House and the House/Wilson friendship/sexship, I call bullshit. Giving Wilson that one scene, which never even got resolved. Not having Wilson spend the episode worrying about House. Not forcing Sam to see that Wilson will always worry more about House than her. Not even letting him SEE House before he went home. Why give that scene to Foreman? Why have Foreman, Taub, Chase or 13 in the episode at all?
And most of all, and here's where I really think it was a deliberate slap...to stage the "non-relapse" so there was a question as to who would be there, KNOWING that every House/Wilson shipper and pretty much anyone who actually paid attention to the show for 6 years, would expect Wilson to be standing there.
Having it be Cuddy and having her pull this out of nowhere, "I dumped Lucas, I love you" crap? After showing us, that if nothing else, there was some genuine affection between Lucas and Cuddy. He could be a jerk, but he tried to be there for her. The "revenge" plot was lame and spiteful, but it was for her.
Sorry folks, least appealing kiss I've ever seen Hugh Laurie do and that includes last year's puke mouth hallucination.
Where do we go from here? Are they really going to play H/Cuddy as a couple? Is New and Improved House going to continue being New and Improved (while still abusing alcohol and no one mentioning it?) I still don't care about Taub and his wife or 13 and her Huntingtons.
The only thing that makes sense is they TRY to do H/Cuddy and Wilson/Sam and we start the stop-watch on soon both of those fall apart and H/W fall back into old patterns, but I can't see Cuddy playing Amber redux from the other side.
I don't know if I'm done with this show. I just know I want to be.
