He joins up regardless of the conflict, knowing well that the line between soldier and civilian means nothing in the heat of combat or the chaos that follows.
The battlefield is a place to escape the self-imposed prison of a life spent waiting for the Doctor, and a chance to fight a human enemy for a change. It’s not necessarily better than Torchwood, but at least it’s different, and there’s always romance to be found either on leave or in the trenches.
Besides, he always looks good in uniform.
