Jon still has a Jersey boy’s infatuation with New York, especially in spring, before the heat of August makes him wilt and whine. He loves to take a walk down Broadway with Stephen, the two of them grinning and trying not to break into goofy show-tune moves that might impede traffic and be deadlier to their straight-guy images than the already lethal amount of subtext they manage to sneak into every on-air exchange.
Stephen urges him toward a Korean green-grocer for a bag of fresh fruit, instead of the street-vender Italian ice his sweet-tooth craves. He starts to protest until Stephen raises one provocative eyebrow and purses his lips with a promise for later.
Everyone’s seen what Stephen can do with a banana, but only Jon knows about the nectarines.
